2024 Girls in Tech Conference Workshops

Google CS First

In this workshop, students use code to bring a name to life. Using Scratch, a programming language that uses “blocks” to build code, they make a name come to life through animation, sound and music. It can be a nickname, the name of a favorite sports team, place, activity, or anything else kids can think of-encourage them to use their imaginations!

Phidgets

Explore the world of programming and sensors with Phidgets Education. Participants will explore hands-on how fun and easy it is to utilize the various Phidgets sensors in the classroom to learn coding with various resources and lessons that empowers learners and enhances digital literacy skills. This session allows students to be at the centre of learning using Phidgets by allowing them to complete their own projects while learning how to code in various languages.

Create an Epic Design Powered by AI, Coded by You!

Are you an artistic coder? Then this is the perfect Lite Byte for you! In this workshop you will discover how to infuse artistic elements into your coding projects. You will do this by learning to use commands such as setpensize, pendown, and setcolour to incorporate more vivid colours and creativity into your final masterpiece. You will code buttons that bring to life different shapes and design - and yes, you can make your finished project as aesthetic and visually appealing as you want. You will master turtle movements, explore positioning, and experiment with the power of AI to create visual wonders and a totally personalizable project!

Girls Make Games: Unreal Engine

In this workshop, students will learn how to make a game in Unreal Engine 4, a 3D computer graphics game engine for creating photoreal visuals and experiences developed by Epic Games. They will engage in a meaningful game development discussion.

Switch Animation: Toon Boom Harmony Animation

The Animation Lounge Workshop is a project-based learning environment where young people have a chance to be inspired by the union of art and technology.

We will build an animated scene while learning teamwork and we will also take a look behind the scenes of an animated feature.

Microbits

Using the Microbit microcontroller, students learn the basics of controlling electricity. Microbits are pocket-sized computers that can be creatively customized and controlled through synced code. They can be used to create robots, musical instruments and more.

MakerKids: Arduino

The Arduino is a prototyping microcontroller popular with both hobbyists and professionals. Kids learn to use a breadboard to wire up circuitry the Arduino can connect to, and then to program their robot to interact with their lights and switches creating their very own customized light show.

Teachable Machines

Building a Machine Learning Model to Predict How Well you'll be doing on your next exam! Will it be a pass or fail? We will be using python, we will first go over the basics of importing and reading and cleaning the dataset, then we will go ahead with building the model. By the end of it, you should be able to use the model to predict your chance of success on your next school exam! This might help you assess the time of study needed to pass and excel ;)
